I know you are used to seeing portraits and more portraits here, but I was going through some older folders of photos and this one jumped out at me again. It was taken at the Michigan State Fair (oldest state fair in the country), in the breezeway between the dairy barn and the swine barn (seriously!). Just goes to show that there are pictures to be had nearly everywhere! To those who celebrate it, Happy Easter!

Once again, I cannot post the photo I shot for this year’s Heart Gallery, but I can give you the link . Clue: Mine is in B&W

The photo above is another from the days of film. Happy Valentines day!

Several of you have asked to see some of the cards I sent in New Years Past. I would like to be able to tell you that I have a pristine collection of every card that I ever sent, cataloged, cross-referenced, and archivally stored. Not so. Not even close. In fact, I’m embarrassed to say that I have only a random smattering of cards from years past, and can’t even pinpoint in which years most of the cards were sent!

Here are a few.

I can tell you that all were sent in the last decade (or so)…. All were actual photographic prints, printed by hand in my own B&W darkroom (current status: cobwebs)…. And while I can’t date them precisely, I can accurately put them in chronological order (I think).

This one has always been a favorite photo. Taken many years ago at an Ann Arbor Street Festival. It’s a sloppy picture in so many ways, but I love the energy in it.

These kids hammed it up for the camera incredibly! Taken on South Beach in Miami back in the days when street photography was still something I felt comfortable doing.

May Day parade in Melbourne Australia. I think this one was shot in 2001 (or 2002) and made it onto my 2002 (or 2003) card.

For the past 30 or so years (don’t remember exactly how long, and yes, I am old!) I have created and sent handmade new year’s cards in lieu of “holiday” cards. At first, the cards were photographic postcards, printed in my darkroom, with a new year’s message scribbled on the back. In the 80′s I got fancy and began imprinting the New Year’s message into the photograph itself. After that, I began looking for images where the image WAS the message. Lots of other creative experiments along the way. Some successful; others less so. A few recent digital cards (even though I felt those were cheating).

Will try to dig out some examples to share, though many of the cards are long gone.

This year’s card is photographic again. It was sent to 167 people on my always-changing New Year’s list. Now that I have a blog, YOU get to see it too.

PS: The easiest way to get on my NY list is to send me postcards. Go to My Website > Details > Postcards to see what I am talking about

Day 6. Spent the entire day on the train from Prague to Budapest. What was supposed to be a 7 hour trip became a 9 hour trip– make your own jokes about Eastern Europe trains not running on time here– due to (depending on which story you believe) mechanical failure, a highway accident, or the train striking a pedestrian. We arrived late, but safely.

First impressions of Budapest is that it is a more hip city. The people look really good. Many fewer tourists.

No pictures from today. Instead, here is a picture shot last night in Prague. These “fast food” sausage stands dot the pedestrian areas. For those whose Czech is a little rusty, Menu 1 is a pork cutlet, menu 3 is fried cheese on a bun, and menu 2 is a Vaclek sausage (think natural casing hot dog, twice as big around, sharply spicy, and with a great “snap” when you bite into it). God only know what gets ground up into these, but they were REALLY good and I will miss eating them.
